Kennedy was in the lobby waiting for the small group to gather for their excursion into Mahahual. She was surprised to see Bert as the first to arrive. He was wearing one of his favorite T-shirts. It showed a camera wearing a cape, and the caption read: I can freeze time. What’s your superpower? “Bert, are you going to the cooking class? Do you have time?”

Bert smiled and straightened his shoulders. “Art requested I go, and you said I needed to help out.”

The corners of Kennedy’s lips went up. “Your helpfulness is to be commended, especially as it seemed such an imposition in the beginning.”

“Well,” Bert said, turning red, “I didn’t realize she’d be so pretty and smart, and—”

“Art, how did it go this morning?” Kennedy blurted out, seeing the pretty redhead walking up to them with Deuce.

Deuce motioned for everyone to gather. “Today, we will travel to Mahahual to a friend’s restaurant, where he will teach us the secrets of cooking foods native to this area. Then, we will prepare several dishes we will share at lunch. It will be a good time for us all to open our minds and close our mouths,” he said, looking pointedly at Tristan and Lola.

Kennedy waved them off and turned to go to the conference room for the morning staff meeting. “Sorry, I was seeing off the passengers,” she said as she dropped into her chair.

“We’ve already gone through our lists, Kennedy,” Franklin said. “I’m sorry we didn’t wait for you, but there wasn’t much to share. How is the competition going?”

“We’ve had a few hiccups, but nothing unsurmountable.” She turned to Mila. “Can you fit Emily Abbott in tomorrow? I know it is last minute.”

“I’ll take care of her myself, so anytime she wants to come will be fine,” Mila said, writing Emily’s name down in her book.

Kennedy turned to Michèle. “Chef,” she began.

“No, non, nein, nee,” he said emphatically, crossing his arms and glaring at her.

“You forgot tak,” Mila giggled.

“I’m not sure, Kennedy, but I think Michèle is saying no. Although we haven’t heard the question,” Franklin said dryly.

“She’s going to ask me to allow that writer woman in my kitchen.” He looked Kennedy in the eye. “The answer is no.”

Kennedy held up her hands defensively. “Don’t kill the messenger. I promised I would ask. And as I heard it, you were the one who suggested she see you ‘conduct’ in the kitchen.”

“Who won this morning?” Luke asked.

Kennedy shook her head. “I didn’t get to go,” she turned her head, “Michèle?”

The dark man uncrossed his arms and rubbed his hands up and down his face. “Jordan, hands down. The others were a train wreck.” He shared what had happened, and they listened in rapt attention.

“What are the plans for the rest of the day, Kennedy?” Omar asked, looking at his watch. He hoped he would have time to get off the boat for a little while to make a private call.

Kennedy shrugged her shoulders. “Everyone is in port, including Bert, who is taking photos of the chef’s excursion.
